Ghostbusters Mania is proud to present N°18 "Interview with Ghosthead" with Marcus of the SLC Ghostbusters
Marcus, tell us a bit 'you. Who are you? What are you doing? Other hobbies or interests?
Currently, I am studying Film Education at BYU. I work for KBYU building and lighting tv sets. I enjoy editing film, and spending time with my beautiful and amazing wife, Anna.
How does this passion for Ghostbusters?
My passion for Ghostbusters extends back to my childhood. I've always found a mystical wonder at these men who overcame everything that I was ever afraid of, and did so with Laser Guns! They were funny, smart, and witty! Deep down, Ghostbusters has always been a happy memory for me even when life gets hard or painful.
When and why did you start building your uniform GB and the equipment and props?
I started building my uniform when I was 4 years old. My father was in the Navy and had a green flightsuit which he altered by hemming it up to fit my tiny body. As I grew older and realized that the Green was inaccurate, I upgraded to a Khaki, and continued to update my Ghostbusters arsenal. As in interesting side-note, the green jumpsuit that I wear in SLC and SLC2 is the same flighsuit I wore when I was a child. If you look close, you can still see the hem marks on my legs and arms. I wear it in honor of my Father who always encouraged me to pursue my dreams.
We have seen that you have participated in many events. What is was your favorite event so far? And why?
My favorite event is the Strankenstein's Zombie Prom. Literally, it is a Prom where everyone that attends does so dressed as a member of the undead! We've shown up for the last 2 years and are gearing up for another and it always brings a lot of joy to people's faces to see a heard of Ghostbusters walk in. It is also nice to give to a great cause since all proceeds go to researching Juvenile Diabetes.
What does this mean for you to be a Ghosthead? And what makes your franciasing?
For me, being a ghosthead is an honor. I love being able to bring joy to people, but more importantly children. Our halloween events always bring scared little kids whose parents always seem to be able to find us. After a few seconds of explaining what it is we do, their sad eyes become dry, their frown becomes a smile and they learn one of the most important rules that Ghostbusters ever taught me, "If you're not afraid, it can't hurt you!" (This is referring to their imaginations as well as ghosts and goblins. When it comes to scary people or strangers, we tell them to ALWAYS tell an adult, or their parents.)
Tell us about the experience of the film fans and next episode.
I loved writing and directing the first episode of Ghostbusters SLC. It was a dream that I have wanted to fulfill since I was a little 4 year old putting on his old blue Kenner Proton Pack and now I can check that off of my bucket list. I am also excited for the second episode that has been written and directed by the actor that portrays Garen Sketch. I am also excited for Episode 3 that will be put together by the actor that plays Kevin "Mavric".
From the beginning, that has been our goal; That each of us would have the chance to write and direct our own 30 minute episode. This was our way to portray Ghostbusters in a way that is unique to each of us. While the first episode was chipper, light, and cartoony (taking a lot of inspiration from the Real Ghostbusters cartoons), the second episode is much darker and explores the tragic side of paranormal apparitions. While it does employ the same characters as in the first episode, it does not tie up any loose ends from the pilot and contains its own storyline. A viewer can watch this episode without needing to watch the Pilot to understand our characters; who all still react in a comedic way to the dark happenings all around them similar to the original Ghostbusters movie as written by Danny.
If I were to summarize the two upcoming films, I would say that SLC1 was the child of GB1 and RGB. SLC2 is a heavy dose of GB1 with a splash of Donnie Darko. While SLC3 will be a full out GB2 with a hint of RGB comedy and mischief. They are all very different interpretations of Ghostbusters, but we feel it's a good way to keep things fresh while still giving the world what they are craving; More Ghostbusting!
